![]() They made us a mounting plate for under $50. Nobody made a DPP plate for the Marlin 45-70, so we asked our leverthusiast friends at Skinner Sights for an assist. We shot a lot with it mounted on the XS rail, but decided our scopeless setup could be made more elegant with a direct mount. #45 70 thumper proWe ended up splitting the difference with a Leupold DeltaPoint Pro reflex optic. ![]() ![]() While we didn’t get cut by the well-deburred loading gate on the MCS 1895, after 150 rounds we did get a blister that called for some athletic tape. So, we’re loath to strap a scope on top that makes it more than a handful to hold. We can’t argue too strongly against this aesthetic attack when we too love the balanced feeling of the gun when grabbed mid-action, thumb over the top.įast handling is one of the most endearing qualities of the lever gun. The classic buckhorn sights are reliable and snag free. ![]() We imagine slick-backed-haired gentlemen saying this as they twist waxed mustaches. Lever gun purists complain it ruins the lines of the gun. Putting a scope on a lever gun is like putting a spoiler on a Honda Civic. It’s regarded as either an aesthetic flourish or as a functional comfort upgrade, depending on the beholder. The finishing touch is the 550-cord wrap on the big loop handle. The gun gets its XS Lever Rail and peep sights reinstalled. The tang slot is filled with Bondo and sanded till it fits as snugly as a prison wallet. For instance, the 1895SBL’s composite wood stock is completely refitted to the action. When the gun’s reassembled, any fit deficiencies are addressed. We chose capacity over cans, since that one round represents 15 percent of the gun’s 6+1 load. The Custom Shop offers the option of threading the muzzle for a brake or silencer, but that modification comes at the cost of one round because the full-length magazine has to be cut back to allow room to thread anything on the barrel. Cerakote is applied to the metallic parts, and the composite wood stock gets an epoxy resin treatment to match. The fore-end is replaced with a Midwest Industries Marlin M-LOK Handguard, and a house-made hammer extension is added. And I thought up until then that I knew everything.Skinner Sights’ new mounting plate for the Delta Point Pro offers reduced height over bore and lighter weight than running a Pic rail and adapter. There was included some extremely interesting information on meplats that I DIDN'T know. That is what I need.ĭid Randy Garrett write that himself? He sent me a CD with loads of back-up material and photos on it. Some SuperJack 350's stopped a goat on a ledge from reaching the ledge. Of course, there have been thousands of happy Buffalo Bore customers, and I take nothing away from them or that I just have settled on Garrett Hammerheads and SuperJack Ammo based on strong recommendation and assurance of no more fractures. When I mean shatter, I mean there was nothing left over the size of a BB, and it all settled less than 3 inches from the bone. I had a Buffalo Bore shatter on a bone hit last spring at 25 yards. Was I out for sheep or moose? I trust you were greeted and treated well in my absence?ĭon't know the specifics about the composition, but I'm assured the Garretts are harder than the Buffalo Bore. Get the training wheels out from under that rifle, would ya!? Beautiful piece you got there! Call it the "big brother" of a hot 45-70. And if 400 grains at 2000 fps is better than 1800, imagine how much better the same bullet is when pushed a whole lot faster by that big case. I've got an original 71 in 450 Alaskan (458-348) and it's a hoot to load for and shoot. On the other hand, if you think more is needed and simply want to spend extra to have a cool rifle, I'd track down one of the new release Model 71's (originally 348) along the lines of what logman recommends. If 2000fps makes you feel better, go for it. So I hold my loads down to 1800 with a clear conscience while reducing wear and tear on my guns. I haven't shot bear with it, but comparing the impact of 400 grain HC loads at 18 fps on other game, I don't see any difference. For me all the talk about "adquacy for dangerous game" is pure pitch- spin to try to take advantage of folks' nervousness about bears by folks that have something to sell. The plain old 45-70 doesn't have any moss growing on it, even if you don't push the pressures that far. ![]()
